Toitū Whāingaroa

Toitū Whāingaroa recognises that achieving the flourishing partnership relationship aspired to in Te Tiriti o Waitangi requires learning, sharing and connecting.

Strengthening community through connection

Educate. Create. Activate.

Supporting the journey of our community towards the flourishing partnership envisaged in Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Ambitious Activators

Responding to our community.

Toitū Whāingaroa operates under the mandate of Raglan Naturally Community Trust hapū representatives.

Challenging ourselves to think big, we prioritise inclusive, creative pathways which support a united and informed community who are activating the true partnership envisaged in Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

We offer multiple points of connection so the community are able to genuinely experience and understand the value of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and te ao Māori as strong foundations for a resilient and flourishing Whāingaroa Raglan.

The Reclaiming Pūtoetoe project is a bold, community-led vision to create a self-funding cultural and community space at the historic Wi Neera/Bow Street site in Raglan.
Raglan Naturally Community Trust has supported the creation of Tirohia Karioi – Behold Karioi, our homegrown feature-length documentary. This movie brings to life the connections and shared stories of those who call Karioi home — from hapū and long settled whānau, to artists, retired trappers and the work of conservationists.

"We pay deliberate attention to both what resonates with our community and to our community needs - whether it's facilitating flax roots activation; local storytelling connecting people to place; or mātauranga Māori learning opportunities"

Connecting through Partnership

Growing our capacity.

We recognise that the flourishing partnership relationship aspired to by prominent Ngāti Māhanga rangatatira and Te Tiriti o Waitangi signatory, Te Awaitaia, provides a foundation for wellbeing for all in Whāingaroa Raglan.

Toitū Whāingaroa provide opportunities which grow the collective capacity of our community to continue to work towards and uphold equitable and flourishing partnerships.

Community members proactively reach out to Toitū Whāingaroa asking for support to become better informed as critical issues arise, both nationally and locally. Supported by our Te Tiriti o Waitangi education opportunities, community members are also leading out their own community activations.
Toitū Whāingaroa grows the capacity of Whāingaroa Raglan to better understand, as well as experience, how the flourishing partnership relationship aspired to in Te Tiriti o Waitangi benefits all in our community.
Located along the Waikato west coast between the mountain of Karioi and Aotea harbour is the Toreparu wetland. The Toreparu Wetland Restoration Project is with working with hapū (Ngāti Whakamarurangi/Tainui) who have long-standing connections with Toreparu and its catchment. Raglan Naturally Community Trust has supported the project to share their stories more widely with the community.
Toitū Whāingaroa knows our community wants to come together to mark our national day in ways that are meaningful. We also know our community is hungry to learn, acknowledge, affirm, celebrate and kōrero about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and it's importance to us all.

"A superlative example of Mana Whenua and Tangata Tiriti working collaboratively and selflessly for our little community and achieving great things. Ka Rawe!"

creating a sense of place

The power of storytelling.

An integral part of Toitū Whāingaroa is celebrating the power of storytelling which intentionally deepens community understanding of connection to people and place. As part of this, we seek to create accessible and enduring resources that are meaningful and capture the imagination of our community.

Responding to requests for support, Raglan Naturally Community Trust has been able to facilitate a range of mātauranga Māori learning opportunities for rangatahi at Raglan Area School.
Karioi is more than just an iconic feature of the Whāingaroa landscape. For Oliver McLeod, a dedicated geological researcher currently working for the Waikato Regional Council, this ancestral maunga is a window into the past, blending scientific exploration with the deep cultural heritage and mātauranga of the area. Oliver partnered with Raglan Naturally Community Trust for the official launch of his book 'Geology of Karioi Volcano, Aotearoa New Zealand'.
Matariki ki tua o ngā whetū - Matariki of endless possibilities. Matariki ki Whāingaroa celebrates who we are as a community. The uniqueness of our people and place shared through music, art, film, kōrero, storytelling, learning and kai.
