Tangata Tiriti | Treaty People Workshops.

Raglan Naturally Community Trust has supported the delivery of Tangata Tiriti workshops in Whāingaroa since 2019.

Led by Dr Ingrid Huygens, the relationship with Tangata Tiriti | Treaty People was first initiated by Lisa Thomson and the Raglan Community Board.

Using resources developed by Tangata Tiriti | Treaty People, Toitū Whāingaroa has also developed a shorter, interactive Te Tiriti exhibition and workshop which has been delivered to a range of different groups in different settings – including students of all ages, staff from local schools and local organisations.

“Some of the simplest and most effective PL I've done in 20+ years of teaching”

"The way the workshop is delivered with the activities is a great way to learn. I left feeling very empowered and educated"

"Simple but effective and powerful”

Whāingaroa Te Tiriti Activation Group

Having local Tangata Tiriti workshop facilitators has always been the long-term goal for Whāingaroa. In October 2025 this goal was achieved, with the forming of the ‘Whāingaroa Te Tiriti Activation Group’.

The collective approach to workshop delivery taken by the Whāingaroa Te Tiriti Activation Group means there is a supportive group approach to learning, knowledge and skill sharing, problem solving and ongoing reflective practice.

The Whāingaroa Te Tiriti Activation Group are well on their way to supporting the Whāingaroa community to grow and embed understandings of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in positive, inclusive and proactive ways across our community.

The Whāingaroa Te Tiriti Activation Group is now available to deliver Te Tiriti o Waitangi workshops across our community.

THE RAGLAN CHRONICLE

Te Tiriti o Waitangi workshops for community learning

Raglan Naturally recently held the first of two annual Te Tiriti workshops, facilitated by Ingrid Huygens from Tangata Tiriti – Tangata People. With the next workshop planned for Saturday October 14th, the Chronicle caught up with a couple of participants to hear about their experience.

Growing Community Understanding

Whāingaroa Te Tiriti Activation Group.

Tangata Tiriti -Treaty People have been delivering workshops in Whāingaroa for over 10 years. Led by Dr Ingrid Huygens, this relationship was first initiated by Lisa Thomson and the Raglan Community Board. Since 2019 the Tangata Tiriti workshops in Whāingaroa have been supported by the Raglan Naturally Community Trust.

For many, the knowledge shared in these workshops has been a source of major ‘aha’ moments about Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Previous workshop participants talk about how they learnt about “the history of Māori before Pākehā arrived – the thriving economy and people”, and how “This needs to be taught in our schools. I will personally continue to advocate for change and acknowledgement of the past”. For others, the overall approach stood out, “I have attended a few Te Tiriti workshops, and this one was a fresh approach”.

The Government is changing how our local governments are organised. What does this mean for Whāingaroa? Could council mergers improve efficiency? How do we make sure local communities keep a strong voice in decision-making?
Raglan Naturally Community Trust is leading a community-wide response focused on how to best support our community in the face of rapidly rising fuel prices and cost of living challenges.
The Raglan Naturally Community Trust appointed its Community Wellbeing Connector (CWC) in September 2022. The initial CWC role was funded by the Ministry of Social Development for 12 months. In 2026, the CWC role has been re-established as a key part of our Cost of Living Community Response.

We would love to hear from you.
