Karioi’s spirit captured in local film

A flaxroots feature documentary brings Karioi to life through the connections and shared stories of those who call Karioi home — from hapū and long settled whānau to artists, retired trappers and the work of conservationists.

When local whakairo artists Tare Kereopa and Raj Irving first heard Karioi was a theme of the 2025 Matariki ki Whāingaroa art exhibition they were inspired to jointly create a piece for the exhibition.

What does it mean to be resilient?

In the past five years Whāingaroa has faced its share of challenges. From the disruptions of a global pandemic to local road closures and power outages, the town has had to adapt quickly.

At the same time, the cracks in wider systems are becoming harder to ignore. But what does it actually mean for a community to be resilient in the face of such change?

Raj Irving – Connecting people and place

The theme for Matariki ki Whāingaroa 2025 is stories of people and place. Born and bred in Whāingaroa, local carver Raj Irving has always travelled pathways which explore whakapapa and sense of identity in Aotearoa.

Rangatahi Take Their Place for Youth Week

With the theme ‘Take Our Place’, Raglan rangatahi certainly did just that across a variety of activities for Youth Week. Youth week is an annual festival celebrating rangatahi across the motu, led by Ara Taiohi, an organisation that enables young people to create inclusive youth events across Aotearoa.

In late 2022, a group of like-minded community members came together to launch the Whāingaroa Youthwork Collective – Ngā Whakaruruhau Māhuri.

One of the aspirations of the members was to one day fund a paid youthwork coordinator, which has now come to fruition.

Treaty Principles Bill voted down

On April 10th 2025 the Coalition government’s ‘Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill’ was finally voted out by a margin of 112 votes to 11. The introduction of the Bill on November 7, 2024 saw the youngest Member of Parliament, MP for Hauraki-Waikato, Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke rip up a copy of the Bill.

Raglan Refill delivers for the environment

After months of hard work, Raglan Refill is set to open its pantry doors to package-free shopping on Monday, March 17.

Open Monday to Saturday from 10.30am-4.30pm, the non-profit venture is based in a new cabin at the Raglan Club carpark (next to the recently relocated Lions op-shop).
