Project Details

Whāingaroa’s Waitangi Day celebrations offer the community an opportunity to learn about and reflect on the significance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. These events bring together tangata whenua, local residents, and visitors to share knowledge, build connections, and demonstrate support for the Treaty. From historical displays to interactive experiences, the celebrations create meaningful pathways for ongoing community engagement with Te Tiriti.

Feedback

“Such a fantastic event pulled together so quickly. Informative, friendly, a superlative example of Mana Whenua & Tangata Tiriti working collaboratively and selflessly for our little community and achieving great things. Ka Rawe!”my eyes and inviting me into rewriting the history books going forward.”

Waitangi Day  Celebration

Community Aspiration

Strengthen relationships with whānau, hapū, and iwi, working towards a true partnership under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It was an opportunity to celebrate and respect cultural diversity in Whāingaroa.

Objective

To acknowledge Waitangi Day as a community, fostering understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its local significance.

Waitangi Day 2022
  • Designed and installed a Treaty of Waitangi information board at the i-Hub Raglan Information Centre.
  • Engaged with community groups to explore interest in a local event. While interest was high, capacity and short notice were limiting factors.
  • Planned community gatherings, including a survey and sausage sizzles, but Covid restrictions prevented these from proceeding.

Waitangi Day 2023

  • With the Hapū Hapori Engagement Coordinator recruited in March 2023, there was not enough lead-in time to organise an event.

Waitangi Day 2024

  • A handwritten historical timeline of Crown breaches and Māori resistance.
  • Large display boards featuring inspirational and thought-provoking quotes.
  • A conversation space with resources, action sign-up sheets, and a central discussion area.
  • A Toitū te Tiriti Whāingaroa canvas signing and Kotahitanga Korowai.
  • A live feed from Waitangi.
  • Tea, coffee, and cakes to encourage whakawhanaungatanga.
  • Filming for a Toitū te Tiriti Whāingaroa short film by a local filmmaker.
