The Geology of Karioi Volcano Book Launch & Exhibition (7-14 September 2024) explored 300,000 years of volcanic history through Oliver McLeod’s book and a public exhibition. The event combined geological science and mātauranga Māori to deepen the community’s connection to the local landscape.

‘Geology of Karioi Volcano’ Book Launch & Exhibition
Objective
Building on the success of Matariki ki Whāingaroa 2024, this event aimed to offer the Whāingaroa community an opportunity to further explore and engage with mātauranga Māori and geological science, particularly in relation to our local environment and history.
- The Toitū project team is meeting regularly with Oliver McLeod to plan the book launch and exhibition.
- Liaising with a printer to create exhibition materials.
- Sourcing rock samples and petrified trees for the exhibition.
- Creating promotional materials for the book launch and exhibition.
- Coordinating a radio interview with Oliver McLeod on Raglan Community Radio (scheduled for Friday, 23rd August).
- Writing an article for the Raglan Chronicle (22nd August 2024 edition).
- Collaborating with hapū representatives who contributed to the book to attend and participate in the book launch and panel discussion.
- Organising a whakatau for the book launch with hapū participation.
- Hosting the official book launch for Oliver McLeod’s Geology of Karioi Volcano on 7th September 2024 at Stewart St Hall, Whāingaroa.
- Curating a public exhibition at the Raglan Old Arts Centre to complement the book launch (7-14 September 2024).
- Working with a local filmmaker to create a short film documenting the book launch and exhibition.
