Matariki ki tua o ngā whetū – Matariki of Endless Possibilities

Matariki ki Whaingaroa 2024, celebrated under the theme “Matariki ki tua o ngā whetū – Matariki of Endless Possibilities,” was a huge success, running from June 28 to July 7.

This year’s festival intentionally highlighted the power and potential within Indigenous knowledge, bringing together the community through a diverse programme of film, art and kōrero. The festival’s art exhibition, guided by a tuākana-tēina focus, showcased the work of both established and emerging local Māori artists, offering a unique platform for storytelling that resonated deeply with all who attended. Our kōrero and film sessions were equally impactful, drawing large audiences and fostering rich discussions about whakapapa and cultural connections.

The festival’s success was made possible through the support and collaboration of many dedicated individuals and organisations, including the Whaingaroa Destination Management Organisation, the Raglan Old School Arts Centre, and the many artists and speakers who contributed their talents and insights. We are especially grateful to Taruke Thomson for her unwavering support in bringing our vision for Matariki ki Whaingaroa 2024 to life and to Matariki ki Waikato who provided funding for each artist to receive a koha.

The festival not only celebrated Matariki but also strengthened the bonds within our hapori, as people were inspired to connect with local stories and embrace the possibilities for the future. Matariki ki Whaingaroa 2024 has laid a solid foundation for continued cultural activation, embodying the festival’s theme of endless possibilities.
